Western Alliance

The Western Alliance comprises the nations commonly associated with the West, from Europe, through the United States, to Japan.

Background

The Alliance is the most advanced supranational union in history. Thanks to breakthroughs in space technologies, the Alliance has colonized much of the Sol system. Bolstered by raw materials mined from asteroids, automated zero-gravity manufacturing plants, and nanotechnological breakthroughs, it has terraformed Mars and founded colonies throughout the known space - to the point that it was poised to reach beyond the confines of Sol.

However, it has stretched its forces thin in the process. Decades of colonial warfare against the Coalition's future member states have worn out military budgets and resulted in countless casualties. Weary of war and border conflicts that plagued their expansion, such as the 2075 Lunar Conflict or the 2152 Europa Conflict, Alliance nations jumped at the opportunity to put an end to hostilities. The Balma Treaty was to be signed at Jupiter's moon, Europa, ending a century of strife. In a gesture of good will, Alliance forces were ordered to stand down across the system to not provoke the newly-formed Coalition.

However, the Coalition used this opportunity to launch a surprise attack, targeting Alliance possessions and fleets across Sol. The initial attack overwhelmed and destroyed the Franco-Italian fleets moored in Martian orbit, followed by a massive land offensive across Earth and Mars and attacks on the outlying colonies. Ganymede, Io, and Europa fall together with the bulk of the Alliance fleets, forcing the devastated remnants to make for Neptune and its moon, Triton, where the remaining Alliance forces rally.

Nations

United States of America

One of the core nations of the Alliance, operating deep space military bases such as Fort Carter and Fort Baxter, together with a fleet of carriers and cruisers (ANS Endeavor, ANS Washington) and veteran outfits (101st Hell Cats, 105th Cougars, 109th Maulers, 110th Pumas).

United Kingdom

The British evaded the fate of the French and the Italians and their carriers and squadrons remain a large part of the war effort. The ANS Illustrious, ANS Intrepid, and ANS Victorious are an integral part of any military operation against the Coalition, as are the 604th Buccaneers, 605th Pirates, and 606th Black Aces squadrons.

Italy

With their fleets wiped out in Martian orbit, the Italian contribution to the war has been greatly limited. However, veterans who managed to make it through to Triton (503rd Stingers and 559th Hornets) remain a powerful asset.

France

Decimated during the Deimos Massacre in Martian orbit, the French fleet is nonexistent. Surviving assets, like the Mirage IV fighter, remain the backbone of the Alliance's remaining fighter squadrons, while surviving Frenchmen like the 205th Marauders are some of the most powerful assets in the Alliance's arsenal.

Germany

A major colonial power, operating two of the most advanced strike carriers, the ANS Bremen and ANS Koenig, and supplying the powerful Grendel and Wolverine heavy fighters to the war effort. German squadrons, the 306th Jackals, 307th Vampires, and 311th Jaguars, are all veteran outfits critical to the Alliance's survival.

Japan

Though small in territory, Japan's martial culture and technological advancement make it an important part of the Alliance. The 409th Ronin squadron and the ANS Yamato, the most advanced carrier in Alliance service, are a crucial element of the defensive strategy.

Spain

The last of the European allies supporting the Alliance.
