Torpedoes are self-propelled missiles designed for use against enemy capital ships and commonly used by both the Alliance and the Coalition. Each carries a potent warhead (with the most powerful having a daranium tip) and is designed to collide with enemy warships and explode on impact, dealing catastrophic damage. They can be launched from dedicated strike craft, such as bombers, or by capital ships from torpedo tubes that complement their direct fire weapons and fighter contingents.

Gameplay[ | ]

Torpedoes are a critical element of gameplay, encountered virtually every other mission, typically launched by enemy bombers and infrequently capital ships. Whenever they appear, they are a priority target, as few ships can withstand repeated hits and torpedoes typically target mission-critical targets. It appears that Alliance warships lack point defense weapons and the rest of your wing is effectively useless at dealing with them. Fortunately, torpedoes are protected by paper-thin armor and are readily destroyed with just a few shots from your fighter's primary weapons (or colliding with them, which is a capital B bad idea, as it's an instant kill with no opportunity to eject). Fortunately, you have a dedicated hotkey, T to target torpedoes specifically (and a Blindfire-enabled ship).

In missions where your side launches torpedoes, you will typically have to shave off surplus turrets from enemy capital ships and destroy their shield generators. Coalition fighters don't target torpedoes, but warship defenses do. Most often, however, you'll have to cover the collective posterior of Gamma wing, as they jump in and - unlike Coalition bombers - ponderously make their way to the target, with zero attempts at evasion or defense.
